The name sunflower or helianthus is from the Greek word hēlios which is translated as "sun", because of its round flower heads in combination with the yellow petals which looks like the Sun. The young sunflowers will also track the sun, however as the flower grows, the head becomes heavier and will stay in place.
We found some fun facts about sunflowers at royaltonlibrary.org. The tallest sunflower was measured in 2014 in Germany, it was standing over 9 meters tall, this was confirmed by the Guinees World Records on 28 August 2014.
Sunflowers are good at absorbing toxins, millions were planted after the devastating Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in Japan. How amazing is that.
When you receive or get home with your Alstroemeria stems, trim the stems on an angle and place the stems in fresh water. Alstroemeria flowers love a little light, but not too much. The best place for them is on a table near a windlow, somewhere with a little morning sun and a shade later in the day.
Avoid any window sills, the sunshine through the glass will dehydrate your flowers and make them fade faster than they should!
